Jennifer Lewis is a famous American actress, singer, comedian, and activist. She is known for playing mother roles in several films, including The Preacher’s Wife (1996), Think Like a Man (2012) and its sequel Think Like a Man (2014), among others. She is recognized for her role in the miniseries Temptations (1998).

Jenifer Lewis began her career starring in Broadway musicals and as a backup singer for Bette Midler in the 1990s. She later appeared in the films “The Beach” (1988) and “Sister Act” (1992). She landed the role of Effie White in Michael Bennett’s musical Dreamgirls, but when the show moved to Broadway, Bennett chose Jennifer Holliday to play the role.

Lewis is also known as the “Mother of Black Hollywood” for her many matriarchal film and television roles. On November 14, 2017, she published a memoir of the same name, “The Mother of Black Hollywood.”

She voiced Mama Odie in the Disney animated feature The Princess and the Frog (2009) and Flo in Pixar’s Cars series. Her other film roles include “Dead Man” (1995), “Cast Away” (2000) and “After” (2010).

On television, Jenifer Lewis played Lana Hawkins on the medical drama Strong Medicine from 2000 to 2006. She also appeared on the sitcoms A Different World (1990-93), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1991-96) and Girlfriends (2002-06).

In 2014, Lewis began starring as Ruby Johnson on Kenya Barris’ comedy series Black-ish, for which she was nominated for two Critics’ Choice Television Awards. She currently appears in the sitcom series Grown-ish (2022), a spin-off of the Black-ish series.

She shared the cover of her upcoming book “Walking in My Joy,” which will be released on August 30, 2022. Lewis voices the recurring character Patty on the animated television series Ghost and Molly McGee (2021-present). She was nominated for a Black Volume Award and an NAACP Image Award for her performance in Five (2011).

In 2018, Lewis played a nosy neighbor in the music video for Todrick Hall’s third solo album, Forbidden. In 1996, she played Eyrkah’s mother in Erykah Badu’s song On & On.
